Acupuncture needle fear

Don’t Let Fear of Needles Prevent a Pain-free Existence

“If only acupuncture didn’t involve needles, then I would do it.” Have you ever said this to yourself?

At Peninsula Acupuncture, we understand that fear of needles is a very real thing—even though they’re an essential part of what we do. Peninsula Acupuncture is the premier alternative health care provider in the Mountain View, Los Altos, and Sunnyvale, CA, area.

Gauging needles

The needles we use should not be confused with those used for other medical procedures. Because they do not draw fluids in or out of the body, they can be very, very thin—some are only 0.12 mm in size. That’s as thin as a human hair!

Interestingly, most people discover that acupuncture not only relieves pain, it is also an incredibly relaxing experience and provides a sense of calmness that lasts throughout the day.

Not all needles

Yes, needles are a part of acupuncture—but only a small part. An appointment with an acupuncturist is mostly rest and relaxation. It’s a time to reflect and breathe. Acupuncture stimulates endorphins and has a calming effect on the body and mind.

In our experience, a prolonged discussion about the acupuncture process with scared patients can only stoke their fears. Instead, we use a few pediatric ear points to show patients that needles just aren’t that big a deal. Usually, frightened patients are instant converts, pleasantly surprised to find that acupuncture is an enjoyable experience.

We take it slow and use only a few needles on the first visit. We build toward more comprehensive sessions as the patient realizes acupuncture is in a different category altogether from other medical procedures that involve needles.

So many conditions can be treated with acupuncture, ranging from allergies to sciatica. If you’re afraid of needles, but wish you could explore the benefits of acupuncture, give us a call. We can answer your questions.
